Product Review

An affordable, convenient, and efficient way to package foods to be cooked in the SousVide supreme water oven, the SousVide supreme vacuum sealer has powerful suction to make sure that your foods are sealed properly. With an easy-to-use and an easy-to-clean design, this black and silver sealer has a compact countertop footprint and convenient cord storage. It features two separate settings, one that removes most of the air to ensure maximum heat transfer between the water and the food, and one for quick sealing foods with liquids or marinades. Also great for packaging foods for camping, backpacking, or travel, it can keep stored foods fresher for longer in the refrigerator, freezer, or pantry. The vacuum sealer comes with a power cord, a user's guide, 5 quart-size bags, and 5 gallon-size bags to get you started.

1.0 out of 5 stars Do not buy this vacuum sealer!, January 12, 2011

First of all, I have used vacuum sealers, notably FoodSaver, and I am familiar with sous vide methods (which require a good vacuum and seal that stays sealed).

I received the SousVide Supreme Vacuum Sealer with the Demi Water Bath. Well, first of all, it does not seal well. The controls are only "seal only" and "vacuum seal" (and of course, a "cancel").

The instructions state that you shouldn't use liquids, however, in sealing ANY meat there is some liquid and even this tiny bit of liquid completely prevents a vacuum and seal. So you would need, one supposes, only to use frozen meat. The FoodSaver on the other hand, has a separate vacuum control that allows you to vacuum only to the degree that you want (so you can seal before any liquid interferes with your ability to seal), and then you can select a "seal" separately from "vacuum" -- this allows one to totally control the degree of vacuum which is highly desirable.

I'm sending this back...Read more

2.0 out of 5 stars Bags don't hold a seal, January 14, 2011

We got this sealer as part of a package deal, with the Sous Vide Supreme water oven, and some Sous Vide Supreme vacuum sealer bags.

For FREEZER / PANTRY STORAGE our machine is not functional. We've sealed ten bags for the freezer. All of them start out looking good, but not one of them held the seal airtight overnight.

For SOUS VIDE it can be made to work. We've found sealing each bag three times at each end holds the seal long enough to cook the food.

4.0 out of 5 stars Simple but flexible bag sealer, December 20, 2010

I recently bought this bag sealer. It's about the same price as some of the more basic FoodSaver vacuum sealers and does almost exactly the same job: you place a bag in the jaws, press both sides to look the lid in place, press one button and it sucks all the air out and then seals the bag.

There are sealers available from other places/refurbished that will do the same thing for substantially less money.

However, I like this particular sealer for two reasons. First, it's really simple to use. Second, there is a "seal only" button that will let you make a seal without generating a vacuum first. This button is the extra feature that separates it from some of the cheaper vacuum sealers. Why so important? Well, again there are two reasons: first, if you want to save money buying the bags, you can instead buy a roll of plastic tubing, cut off as much as you need, seal one side to create a bag that is sealed on three sides, fill it, then seal it as you normally...Read more
