Product Review
Product Description
In the homespun days, food was usually fried in a big cast-iron metal pot. But modern times demand simpler solutions. The Presto GranPappy electric deep fryer fits on a countertop and is so easy to use. Just add oil, plug it in, and in 15 minutes it's heated up and ready to fry. Its sleek, black bucket shape matches form to function-- simple and classic. The GranPappy holds up to six cups of oil or three pounds of shortening, and it can accommodate up to six servings of food at a time. The internal thermostat keeps the oil at the optimum frying temperature. An accompanying scoop, slotted for draining, is for lifting food in and out or for turning food halfway through the cooking time. The power cord has a magnetic safety connection, so that if the unit is jostled during cooking, the cord will disconnect, shutting power off immediately. After straining the used oil, it can be poured back into the unit and stored, covered by the accompanying snap-on plastic lid. After frying, unplug the unit and allow it to cool completely before attempting to empty oil. Wash the GranPappy with warm, sudsy water and dry it thoroughly; it is not immersible. To preserve the nonstick finish, inside and out, do not use steel wool or harsh, abrasive cleansers. The Presto GranPappy measures 8 by 8-1/2 inches. Presto guarantees this product with a one-year limited warranty. A simple instruction and recipe sheet is enclosed. --Garland Withers

Summary: This is all you need- the granpappy fryer 2010-08-29
Comment: This makes fried food come out great every time. Although it does not have a timer, the cooking is very consistent if you use the same appoximate amount of food each time. I especially like cooking squid and home fries in it. It is good to always cook the potatoes first because they leave virtually no residue in the cooker so nothing gets burned if you are cooking over a long period of time. Then the squid. It comes out really well and heats up nice in the toaster oven the next day, originally dipped in egg and flour.

Summary: Disappointed 2010-08-28
Comment: I am disappointed with the cooking results of my new Presto GrandPappy deep fryer. With several trials attempting to deep-fry chicken, the results were unsatisfactory. Using chicken at room temperature, breading it, and slipping it into the GrandPappy, I found that when the coating reached a pleasing golden brown, the meat was not thoroughly cooked. When leaving the chicken in the pot long enough to be done, the breading burned--not at all tasty.

The GrandPappy is a plug-and-play product without temperature control. The oil gets very hot, too hot. My candy thermometer revealed the oil temperature resides at 380 degrees. The recommended oil temperature for deep frying chicken is 365 degrees, explaining why the outside of the chicken is done well in advance of the inside.

I would not recommend this product.

Summary: Great little fryin' bucket 2010-08-20
Comment: The GrandPappy is basically a bucket shaped simple fryer and it is fabulous. It got here just today and I have already made fried chicken, fried tuna balls and fried broccoli and mushrooms in it and I have never deep fried anything, although I am a good cook otherwise. I just made a simple egg & flour batter with seasonings, let it heat up 15 minutes and dropped them in. When everything is nice and golden you scoop them out. My husband was doing the happy dance and I will definitely be frying something again tomorrow. I fry in olive oil so I don't worry about it too much.

A few notes about it -

It is smaller than you expect it to be but holds a LOT of food. When they say six big servings can fit, they are serious. There is no thermostat, but 350 really seems like it would work for anything. The oil fill line seems low - but that is all the oil you will need. Make sure to read the instructions - lots of good tips in there for a good frying experience.

At first I thought a cover for use while cooking would be helpful - but I think it is really not needed because most things you fry will be done in a short time anyway. No cover means no steam, which means the food comes out crispier...and it does come out crispy!! I think a basket is just something extra to clean, the scoop works fine for me. I love it.

Summary: Fryin ain't for everybody.. 2010-08-08
Comment: I love chicken wings so I thought I'd save some money and start frying some up at home. I shopped around a little and realized a Presto deep fryer was the way to go; cheap, simple design and eveyone seemed to really like them. I got the GranPappy because it was only a few bucks more and it was larger.
Okay, so I bought some oil, wings and hot sauce and was excited about frying for the first time in my life. I lowered some wings in my new GranPappy and all hell broke loose! oil exploded everywhere, hot oil burned my hands and face, smoke and the sound of fireworks filled the air. Evidently there was a small amount of condensation on the chicken wings - my fault. The next day I was determined to try again, this time I dried the wings with a hair dryer and a towel. I'm a little paronoid at this point as you might imagine. I slowly lower the wings in the fryer and to my relief, no explosion. There was however oil splatter in about a 2 foot radius all around the fryer. I've tried using a lid but the oil still gets everywhere. Even when everything goes right, its loud, stinky, dangerous and always a oily mess. I've never yet been able to fry something and NOT get burned by the hot oil. I think I'll give my GranPappy to my ex-wife and leave the fryin to the pro's.

Summary: Time for another one 2010-07-24
Comment: I bought a GranPappy in '95 and it lasted 12 years until the heating element finally gave out. It cooked many many batches of buffalo wings and other things over the years, and always perfectly. I've tried the more complicated fryers with their fancy thermostats, lids, lift baskets, and other complicated and very hard to clean parts. One of them quit in less than 3 months of ownership. To be honest, I was glad it did. Forget that! Go simple! Get you a GranPappy. That's what I'm getting next.
