Summary: A "must-have" for fried turkey lovers 2004-12-10
Comment: We got this for Thanksgiving this year and used it to fry one of the best turkeys we've ever had. It's even rated highly by Consumer Reports, which no one can say about gas turkey fryers. And it is even certified by UL, as the others aren't.
This fryer has many other uses that just frying turkey. We've used it to steam lobsters, clams and crablegs as well. It fries up to and 14 lb turkey. Initially we thought this was a "con" for the electric fryer since we sometimes host a bigger Thanksgiving than a 14 lb turkey will feed, but then we discovered that it wasn't recommended to fry anything over 15 lbs anyway since it then gets to a point that it would require too long of a cooking time for a juicy turkey.
The user manual breaks down cooking times for many items from fries, to a turkey breast to hot wings or a turkey.
The great thing about the electric vs. the gas is that you can cook indoors. With gas, it takes about 4 times as long and you have to cook outdoors FAR away from any buildings and it is highly recommended that you stay with it at all times. Who wants to sit out in the cold for 4 hours watching a turkey cook?
The drain on the side is a wonderful added feature that you shouldn't have to live without. It is set just high enough to drain most of your oil, but leave any settlement in the bottom for easy cleaning. (This is really handy and one of the big tips to frying turkey is continued use of the oil for a few times as it's gets better when "seasoned".)
The adjustable thermostat (with safety shut-off) eliminates the need to monitor temperature, which can be somewhat difficult with the gas fryer. The glass lid with a "cool-touch" handle allows you to monitor your food easily.
Other features include: Six legs to make it even more stable. An outer shield to protect against the heat generated from the frying. A maximum fill line for oil, to minimize spatters, spills, and fires. A 'ready'cook light. A lifting hook and the basket has a drain clip for easier draining. And it comes apart for easy cleaning.
