Untill now never had one without a hinged lid or hinged handle to raise and lower the basket. However, here it is March, and I was prepared to fry up some fries today. It would not turn on. I unplugged it and plugged it back up. It still didn't do anything. The grease never got hot, and the little light on the side never came on. Fortunately, I got a great price back on Black Friday. So, no big deal. I got my money's worth. Still, I would not shell out any big money on this brand.
