Product Review

More fun than a traditional salt shaker, the Chef'n Salt Ball comes filled and lets you grind fresh salt onto your meal with a one-handed squeeze. Its round body holds about 5 ounces of sea salt and is constructed of clear, durable plastic so you can see when you're running out. Two ergonomically designed grips poke out of the top of the ball, allowing you to simply grab and squeeze to season (four squeezes produce about 1/8 teaspoon). There's a dial at the base for adjusting the grind from fine to coarse, and a hatch door on the side of the ball's body for refilling. This great invention makes cooking much more convenient--you can easily stir your slow-cooking tomato sauce with one hand and salt with the other. --Cristina Vaamonde

I love the taste of fresh ground salt -- it's much better than the canned alternative. I really like the Chef'n Salt Ball since I can grind salt with one hand -- really helpful when I'm adding salt to a recipe. My only gripe would be that it doesn't dispense a whole lot of salt on each grind... but that lets you easily control the amount of salt to dispense. It's a great combination with the Chef'n Pepper Ball. One word of warning: it's bigger than you may think. The ball is easily between three and four inches wide, and the handles go up a good distance -- maybe five inches. Don't think of this as the size of a normal salt shaker (the pictures make it hard to see how big it is).

5.0 out of 5 stars Totally "upscale" and "eye-candy", September 7, 2002

I use my pepper-ball and salt-ball right in my tablesetting ... my dinner-guests never fail to comment on the upscale look and convenience, so it has been "eye-candy" and adds to the drama when I serve crisp salads, etc. Part of the meal is being able to allow your guests the opportunity to season as they wish. I dunno, but I would also like to see the same design to allow diners to embellish plates in the same manner with grated cheese and also one for dessert-toppings that would add crushed pecans, walnuts, etc.

This nifty gadget allows me to grind salt with one hand as I cook. And, it's a fun addition to a dining table with its very contemporary rather whimseical design. The handles that you grip are padded thus ergonomically friendly and enable gripping without slipping. A dial selector on the base of the salt ball provides options for coarseness of grind, and it comes equipped with a refull funnel. Plus, it comes filled with salt. This is one grind I'll never mind! Thanks, Chef'n! - Gail Cooke
